ONLY 48 NIGERIAN WERE DEPORTED FROM UK, NOT 500----NIS

The Nigerian Immigration Service,
NIS, has faulted reports claiming that
over 500 Nigerians were deported
from the United Kingdom on
Wednesday.

The British Broadcasting Corporation
had reported earlier that a plane
conveying about 500 Nigerian
deportees from the UK had landed
at the MMIA.
The report quoted some of the
deportees as saying that they were
not happy to come back.
Reacting, spokesperson of the NIS,
Mr. Ekpedeme King stated that the
United Kingdom Government on
Wednesday deported only 48
Nigerians over immigration related
offences and not 500 as widely
reported.
“Some of them have overstayed
their visa,” King said.
The federal government had
recently expressed concern over the
UK’s plan to deport 29,000
Nigerians, and has insisted that due
process be followed before its
citizens are being removed from the
UK.
But a top immigration officials at
MMIA, who spoke to newsmen, said
the 48 deportees had nothing to do
with the 29,000 Nigerians that the
UK was planning to deport back into
the country.
